This is a vintage kimono jacket, called a haori, made for a man. The lining of men's haori jackets often depict a scene or motif that was of special interest to the original owner.

This jacket is fully lined but only the top part of the back lining is patterned with a partial scene of a sail against a partly cloudy sky.  Perhaps there was damage to the lower half of the sailboat scene and the lining was replaced. Or perhaps this partial scene is intentional,  as a somewhat extreme application of the Japanese aesthetic called yuugen, or "mysterious beauty", which asks the viewer to fill in the rest of the image.

We display these haori inside out to feature the lining when it is unique. All of the stitching is hidden, so these jackets can normally be displayed or worn (in the West, at least) either way.

See video below for how haori are worn these days.
