This is a vintage kimono jacket, called a haori, made for a man. Learn more about this type of garment below.

A hidden landscape unfolds across the lining of this striking men’s haori, combining the atmosphere of an old painted scroll with flashes of woven gold. A sweeping ribbon-like panel frames a rocky waterscape with traditional pavilions and houses, pine-covered hills, golden foliage, and a small sailboat. Metallic threads illuminate the scene like sunlight across the landscape.

The calligraphy appears to be poetic with references that include Funiushan (Funiu Mountains) and imagery of immortals, mist, and a secluded landscape, reinforcing the design's theme of retreat into an idealized natural world.

The outer silk is classic solid black and finished with five white bamboo-leaf family crests, a motif associated with resilience, strength, and enduring vitality.

The lining of men's haori jackets often depict a scene or motif that was of special interest to the original owner. We often display these jackets inside out to show the lining, and they could be worn this way - inside out - as well; a style that is becoming trendy among Japanese youth. See video below for how haori are worn these days.

If you need a display rod to hang your purchase, we offer 60" wooden rods - see tab below.
