This is a vintage kimono jacket, called a haori, made for a man. Learn more about this type of garment below.

Bold and wonderfully graphic, this haori hides a collage-like lining of overlapping papers in earthy brown, charcoal, cream, and indigo tones. The cotton lining alternates fierce dragons twisting through stylized waves with pine branches and scattered sheets of flowing calligraphy, creating the impression of illustrated pages and handwritten letters layered together. Dragons traditionally symbolize strength, power, and protection, while evergreen pine represents longevity and steadfastness, giving the seemingly playful patchwork design a deeper auspicious meaning.

The outer fabric appears to be silk, woven in a finely textured brown and black ikat-style grid that gives the jacket a wonderfully understated, almost tweedy appearance.

The lining of men's haori jackets often depict a scene or motif that was of special interest to the original owner. We often display these jackets inside out to show the lining, and they could be worn this way - inside out - as well; a style that is becoming trendy among Japanese youth. See video below for how haori are worn these days.

If you need a display rod to hang your purchase, we offer 60" wooden rods - see tab below.
