This listing is for an underkimono - called a "juban" in Japanese - which would be worn under a man's kimono. Learn more about this type of kimono below.

A richly detailed winter tableau unfolds across this brown men’s underkimono, its subdued palette of gray, blue, white, and black giving the design an almost vintage postcard quality.

Angular fragment-like shapes break across the subtle grid-patterned background, combining plaid, stripes, and small geometric patterns with snowy temple scenes filled with pagodas, gates, evergreens, travelers beneath umbrellas, and falling snow. 

Smaller fragments feature what appear to be traditional vessels or perhaps temple bells decorated with miniature landscapes, adding another layer of intricate scenic imagery. A black over-collar provides a strong contrast to the earthy palette.

Signs of age are present, including areas of fading.

Juban often feature designs that reflect the interests of their owner but are rarely seen in public since they are layered underneath a kimono. Just an inch or two of the over-collar is visible, though you may catch a glimpse of the sleeve edge at the wrist. Juban make great casual robes.

This kimono does not come with an obi/belt/sash, but we do make simple cotton sashes that can be added as an option when you order. We will choose a color that goes well with it.
