This listing is for an underkimono - called a "juban" in Japanese - which would be worn under a man's kimono. Learn more about this type of kimono below.

A wonderfully serene design transforms this soft gray men’s underkimono into a stylized Zen rock garden, accented in earthy green, brown, blue, and white. Kanoko (fawn spot) shibori creates the long architectural sweep of a mud wall that crosses the shoulders and sleeves.  White kanoko also depict the raked-gravel patterns that surround the scattered stones -- several of which are filled with geometric textile motifs.

The imagery recalls karesansui dry gardens, where carefully placed rocks and flowing patterns suggest islands, mountains, and rippling water, creating a sense of balance and contemplation. This kimono has a deep blue over-collar.

A few slight signs of age are present, including a small spot on the back and discoloration on the over-collar, see last photo(s).

Juban often feature designs that reflect the interests of their owner but are rarely seen in public since they are layered underneath a kimono. Just an inch or two of the over-collar is visible, though you may catch a glimpse of the sleeve edge at the wrist. Juban make great casual robes.

This kimono does not come with an obi/belt/sash, but we do make simple cotton sashes that can be added as an option when you order. We will choose a color that goes well with it.
