This listing is for a vintage Japanese futon cover or large household cloth. These were often used for bedding or protective coverings, but today it is more of a collectible example of Japanese folk textile artistry valued for its craftmanship, indigo coloration, and striking visual impact.

Full of character and beautifully imperfect, this large blue-and-white cotton textile has the soulful look of a piece that has lived many lives. Twelve stitched sections, including both narrow and wide panels, suggest it may have been assembled or repurposed from earlier Japanese textiles, possibly for use as a kotatsu blanket, futon cover or large household wrapping cloth; the abstract resist-dyed motifs seem to shift between curling waves and stylized birds or bats depending on how you see them.

There are significant signs of age - holes, fading, scattered blemishes, and uneven wear are present throughout, giving the piece a wonderfully authentic wabi-sabi quality. It began as a humble household item and was well-used and likely well-loved, we hope it finds a new home where it will be appreciated.

Watch the video below about the indigo dyeing process.
