This listing is for an antique "yogi" sleeping kimono. Learn more about this type of kimono below.

A dramatic crane spreads its wings across the back of this indigo yogi sleeping kimono, creating a beautifully bold image meant to envelop its sleeper. The large resist-dyed crane is picked out in shades of blue and white with a striking red crown, a particularly auspicious Japanese motif associated with longevity, good fortune, and enduring happiness.

Signs of age and use are present throughout, including fading, unevenness and variation in the indigo dye, visible hand stitching, scattered wear, and other small imperfections consistent with its utilitarian history. The varying shades of indigo, including the lighter blue additions at the cuffs and hem, give the piece wonderful wabi-sabi character.

A yogi is a traditional Japanese sleeping cover constructed in the shape of an oversized kimono, essentially combining the familiar form of a robe with the warmth and coverage of bedding. Rather than being worn as everyday clothing, it was laid over the sleeper like a quilt or comforter, with the broad sleeves and long body helping retain warmth. Yogi were often made from indigo-dyed cotton and could feature large, visually striking designs across the back, making surviving examples especially appealing today as Japanese folk textiles and wall displays.

See the video below about the indigo dyeing process.  And see last photo for how these were really used.
