This traditional Japanese child's apron was designed as a practical protective layer worn over a kimono or everyday clothing. It's simple bibbed construction, crossed shoulder straps and side ties allowed it to be easily put on and adjusted, helping protect a child's clothing during meals, play and everyday activities.

A tiny piece of everyday Japanese textile history, this child’s apron pairs deep indigo with a wonderfully simple geometric design. The kasuri (ikat) weave creates softly feathered cream motifs resembling crosses and small abstract grids, their rhythmic repetition giving the humble garment a distinctly graphic, almost modern look.
