This listing is for a hanten jacket. A hanten is a traditional Japanese short jacket, typically made of cotton and worn as practical work clothing, but this jacket is significantly different!

A bright flash of gold transforms this beautifully understated indigo hanten into something truly special. The back is embellished with the kanji for "longevity" or "congratulations," worked in dense gold metallic couching embroidery, an auspicious symbol associated with long life and celebration.  It is quite rare to have this embroidered rather than stenciled.  Another "non-hanten" feature is the lack of printing on the front which would have identified the maker or sponsor of the jacket.  Curious!

A warm brown fabric edging at the sleeves adds an earthy contrast to the deep indigo.
