This is a pair of formal hakama for a boy. Learn more about this type of garment below.

Like a landscape painting woven into silk, this boy's pants-style hakama unfolds with detailed scenes of traditional architecture, boats on the water, pine trees, and magnificent phoenix birds in soft shades of jade, blue, gold, and rust. Pine symbolizes longevity and steadfastness, while the phoenix is associated with virtue, prosperity, and renewal, giving this richly woven design an especially auspicious character.

At 30" long, this hakama is most likely a boy's or youth size, despite its sophisticated design, and may have been made for a young wearer for a formal or ceremonial occasion.

Hakama are traditional Japanese garments worn over a kimono, recognized for their wide, flowing shape and distinctive pleats. There are two main styles: pants style, which are constructed like very wide-legged pants, and skirt style, which have a continuous, skirt-like, undivided shape. Both styles create a similar graceful silhouette when worn and have historically been used for formal dress, ceremonies, martial arts, and other traditional occasions.
