This listing is for a vintage Japanese wedding kimono (uchikake). An uchikake is draped over top of a kakeshita kimono underlayer, left open without an obi, and has a padded hem as it was once meant to trail across the floor behind the bride.

This uchikake features large cranes (tsuru) soaring above pine boughs (matsu). These motifs are well-matched, as they both symbolize longevity - a common wedding motif. Cranes mate for life and are thought to live 1,000 years according to Japanese mythology. Pine trees are evergreen, symbolizing endurance and longevity.

A deep sky blue peeks out from behind the birds and pine.  The cranes are entirely embroidered in white with red crests, as are the pine boughs, with a range of green silk threads creating shadows and depth.

But look closely to see the many traditional motifs stenciled in gold against the blue.

These wedding kimono are a gorgeous display of Japanese art and culture and can be an heirloom treasure handed down generation after generation. View the slide show below to be amazed at these elaborate works of artistry!

If you plan to display this kimono, we offer sturdy wooden rods for hanging - see options in the tab below.
