This listing is for a vintage tenugui - traditional Japanese cotton hand towel.

A crisp gray checkerboard pattern sets the stage for scattered shogi game pieces in black, blue, and gold, creating a clean, modern design inspired by Japan's traditional strategy game. The pieces represent ranks such as King, Gold General, and Pawn -- symbols of wisdom, planning, perseverance, and careful decision-making. The inscription identifies a building foundation contractor, Suzuki Hide, in Tanakura, Ino Town.

There are signs of age with stains, fading, mottling, and edge wear consistent with vintage textiles. See photos and zoom in for details.

Tenugui hand towels have countless uses, from drying hands and wrapping gifts to home decor, crafting, and displaying.

See the video about the chusen dyeing technique often used in making tenugui hand towels.
