This listing is for a vintage Japanese wedding kimono (uchikake) with a design that recalls the Meiji Period but is likely from the 1930 or 1940s. An uchikake is draped over top of a kakeshita kimono, left open without an obi, and usually has a padded at the hem as it was once meant to trail across the floor behind the bride. (The padding is missing from this one - see below.)

This kimono features a subtly elegant design characteristic of the Meiji Period (late 1800s to early 1900s), rather than the more colorful and elaborately embroidered uchikake that have been popular since. A warm bronze color is traditional for the design, with its intricately woven pattern of cranes, pine branches, tortoise shells, and florals that fill the field.

The red silk lining has a blemish (see photo) and unfortunately, it is also missing the padding it once has at the hem. Perhaps it was removed to be replaced but was never completed. It is still a wonderful nearly-antique kimono that could be displayed from the back without issue.

These wedding kimono are a gorgeous display of Japanese art and culture and can be an heirloom treasure handed down generation after generation. View the slide show below to be amazed at these elaborate works of artistry!

If you plan to display this kimono, we offer sturdy wooden rods for hanging - see options in the tab below.
