Bold geometry meets a restrained garden palette in this striking obi fabric. Intersecting bands of layered greens form a large diamond lattice across a silvery-white background, punctuated by smaller geometric medallions containing stylized floral motifs in green, orange-bronze, gold, and dark gray. The woven design plays with contrasting textures and metallic sheen, giving the overlapping bands and flowers a dimensional, almost architectural quality.

An especially interesting feature appears on the reverse of the solid cream section, where the unused colored threads create a soft, blurred wash of green, yellow, and gray, offering a glimpse into how the patterned face was constructed.

There are signs of age with some scattered blemishes on the solid cream areas.

This bolt is laid out in the traditional fukuro obi format: 46" of solid fabric which would have been sewn as the backside, then an 86" decorative section, then 49" of more solid fabric that would be hidden as an underlayer when the obi was wrapped. 

The fabric is a heavy weave that is both pliable and sturdy – perfect for being tied into an elaborate bow at the back of a kimono, and just a perfect as table or wall décor. Plenty of fabric to convert into home décor (pillows!) or an elegant jacket or coat…?

A fukuro obi is wide for the entire length, plain on the backside and a patterned design only on the front. There is a one yard "blank" section on the front, as is common with contemporary fukuro obi, where some cost can be saved by leaving it blank where the first wrap layer of the belt portion occurs, since it doesn't show to the public.
