This listing is for a vintage tenugui - traditional Japanese cotton hand towel.

Graceful bamboo stalks rise beneath a canopy of stylized jade-green gourd shapes. Gourds symbolize good fortune, prosperity, protection, and abundance, while bamboo represents resilience, flexibility, and enduring strength, giving this design a rich layer of auspicious meaning. The inscription identifies Ohara Shoten ("Ohara Store") along with a vintage telephone number.

There are signs of age with stains, fading, mottling, and edge wear consistent with vintage textiles. See photos and zoom in for details.

Tenugui hand towels have countless uses, from drying hands and wrapping gifts to home decor, crafting, and displaying.

See the video about the chusen dyeing technique often used in making tenugui hand towels.
