This listing is for an underkimono - called a "juban" in Japanese - which would be worn under a man's kimono. Learn more about this type of kimono below.

Playful and full of detail, this man's underkimono stands out with a grid of small squares in purple and black - quite unusual coloring!  Floating along are dozens of masculine motifs done in a blue-toned almost-watercolor wash.

We suspect a merchant or businessman was the first owner given the floating objects:  scrolls that, when opened, offer warm wishes for luck in business; and the kanji on these items seem to focus on good fortune, loyalty, welcoming many customers, and so on.

Gray lining and black over-collar.

There are visible blemishes and signs of age, but the overall look remains bold and fun.

Juban often feature designs that reflect the interests of their owner but are rarely seen in public since they are layered underneath a kimono. Just in inch or two of the over-collar is visible, though you may catch a glimpse of the sleeve edge at the wrist. Juban make great casual robes.

This kimono does not come with an obi/belt/sash, but we do make simple cotton sashes that can be added as an option when you order. We will choose a color that goes well with it.

If you'd like to display the kimono, we offer hanging rods in five colors (brown, black, natural, white, and red) - see the Add a Display Rod? tab below.
