This listing is for an underkimono - called a "juban" in Japanese - which would be worn under a man's kimono. Juban often feature designs that reflect the interests of their owner but are rarely seen in public since they are layered underneath a kimono. Just in inch or two of the over-collar is visible, though you may catch a glimpse of the sleeve edge at the wrist. Juban make great casual robes.

This juban features several ceramic vessels and draw string cloth bags. The background features alternating diagonal waves in earth tones (brown, beige, taupe) each filled with a small, repeated pattern. This patterning gives an overall woven look, perhaps tatami mats, despite it being stenciled.

These elements - ceramics and weaving - aligned with the Mingei (folk craft) Movement where traditional craftmanship was celebrated. In the background are also a few seals typically used by merchants - fuku (good fortune), takara (treasure), and kotobuki (longevity).

The over-collar is black with a cream lining. Look closely at the bottom of the lining to find a different piece of fabric along the hem. The pattern style is reminiscent of ukiyo-e woodblock art prints.

There is some overall mottling that blends into the color palette and is difficult to see. At the top shoulders (front and back) there are thin lines of holes that appear to have been repaired with a patch of fabric stitched behind which gives a wabi sabi (flawed beauty) aesthetic.

Juban make great robes and cover ups but watch the video below to see how to layer the juban with a kimono.

This kimono does not come with an obi/belt/sash, but we do make simple cotton sashes that can be added as an option when you order. We will choose a color that goes well with it.

If you'd like to display the kimono, we offer hanging rods in five colors (brown, black, natural, white, and red) - see the Add a Display Rod? tab below.
