This listing is for an underkimono - called a "juban" in Japanese - which would be worn under a man's kimono. Learn more about this type of kimono below.

A mix of symbolism and everyday objects gives this man's underkimono a layered, story-like feel. Set against a deep blue background with soft cloud forms, the pattern features floating inro - the small bone or wooden pouches that men of the Edo and Meiji Periods would use to hold their tobacco or money. These inro are decorated with shishi (guardian lion-dogs or fu dogs), kamon (family crests) and marine motifs.

The patterning also includes tsuba  (sword hilts) with scalloped edges and filled with other traditional imagery. Blue over-collar with no lining.

Juban often feature designs that reflect the interests of their owner but are rarely seen in public since they are layered underneath a kimono. Just in inch or two of the over-collar is visible, though you may catch a glimpse of the sleeve edge at the wrist. Juban make great casual robes.

This kimono does not come with an obi/belt/sash, but we do make simple cotton sashes that can be added as an option when you order. We will choose a color that goes well with it.

If you'd like to display the kimono, we offer hanging rods in five colors (brown, black, natural, white, and red) - see the Add a Display Rod? tab below.
