This listing is for a vintage Japanese haori jacket. Learn more about this type of garment below.

A richly layered world of gardens, courtly life, and shimmering detail unfolds across this dramatic black and russet haori. Woven urushi lacquered threads in gold, silver, yellow, and green illuminate dense scenes of pine, bamboo, tachibana, paulownia, cherry and plum blossoms, architecture, bridges, and elegantly dressed court figures.

This imagery strongly evokes the aristocratic world associated with The Tale of Genji. Among the intricate landscape is a striking traditional ship with a dragon-headed prow riding through stylized waves and adding another auspicious note of strength and good fortune to the elaborate design.

Black haori like this are sometimes called "visiting haori" since they were worn for semi-formal occasions, like attending a community gathering.  A single floral family crest in white appears at the neck.

A woman's haori is a traditional Japanese jacket worn over a kimono, designed to provide both warmth and an added layer of formality. Today, these jackets transition effortlessly into modern fashion as a lightweight, open-front layer. They can be worn over dresses, denim, or simple basics to add texture, color, and a distinctive, artful touch.

Haori do not cross over or tie with a sash, like a kimono does - they are meant to be worn open to reveal a bit of what is worn beneath. An optional accessory is the haori himo - little woven ties that are hooked to the little fabric loops that you'll find at the mid-front of the haori - but they are sold separately. We'll select one that goes with this haori if you pick the Add A Himo Pair option above. To choose a pair of our fancier himo, CLICK HERE.
