This listing is for a vintage Japanese haori jacket. Learn more about this type of garment below.

Quiet on the outside and breath-taking on the inside, this unusual vintage haori pairs a soft silvery gray exterior with hidden artistry and richly woven accents. Scattered across the outer silk are small, appliquéd brocade fragments, each filled with its own miniature floral or geometric pattern in gold and muted jewel tones -- almost like treasured scraps of antique textile. A single three-leaf ivy crest (tsuta), a motif associated with resilience and enduring growth, appears at the neck.

Inside, the pale lining became a canvas for a striking monochromatic, hand-painted landscape depicting a rustic waterside village with thatched-roof houses, trees, rocky banks, distant mountains, and a small boat along the shore. The loose painting style creates the feeling of a traditional sumi-e landscape, complete with an artist's signature and seal at the lower edge. The understated gray exterior makes the elaborate hidden lining especially delightful.

Artist's signature and seal that appear to read "Gyokudo." The attribution has not been authenticated.

Signs of age are present, including areas of fading and discoloration to the outer fabric that are noticeable on close inspection, see last photos.

A woman's haori is a traditional Japanese jacket worn over a kimono, designed to provide both warmth and an added layer of formality. Today, these jackets transition effortlessly into modern fashion as a lightweight, open-front layer. They can be worn over dresses, denim, or simple basics to add texture, color, and a distinctive, artful touch.

Haori do not cross over or tie with a sash, like a kimono does - they are meant to be worn open to reveal a bit of what is worn beneath. An optional accessory is the haori himo - little woven ties that are hooked to the little fabric loops that you'll find at the mid-front of the haori - but they are sold separately. We'll select one that goes with this haori if you pick the Add A Himo Pair option above. To choose a pair of our fancier himo, CLICK HERE.
