This is a vintage kimono jacket, called a haori, made for a man. The lining of men's haori jackets often depict a scene or motif that was of special interest to the original owner. We often display these jackets inside out to show the lining, and they could be worn this way - inside out - as well; a style that is becoming trendy among Japanese youth. The lining of this man's kimono jacket features a woven scene that almost looks like a postcard.  Look across the lake at a shoreline compound of small buildings - perhaps a temple complex?  Note the pagoda on the far left and to sailboats cutting across the center of the scene.   Sweet colors - a dark purple in the tree leaves matches the rooftops.  The trees themselves are realistically depicted.

Behind the inserted scene is a large chain of interlocking circles in copper against the dark coppery brown silk, and a checkerboard border frames the scene at top and bottom.

The outer jacket fabric is black silk with five katabami (wood sorrel) family crests.

There are many signs of wear or age with this haori.  Some damage at the lower front collar could be repaired or easily hidden if displayed from the back (see next-to-last photo) On the lining near the lower sleeve attachment, both sides have been lovingly repaired (see last photo).  It may have been worn and loved well - we don't see this level of use very often. We suggest that it would still be worn or make a dramatic display piece, and it is priced accordingly.
