This listing is for a vintage Japanese wedding kimono (uchikake). An uchikake is draped over top of a kakeshita kimono underlayer, left open without an obi, and has a padded hem as it was once meant to trail across the floor behind the bride.

This uchikake is completely embroidered, including satin stitching and gold couching.  So much skill and talent in one kimono....  A stunning blue background grounds the elaborate patterning of white cranes flying among golden pine boughs.

Cranes (tsuru) represent longevity and fidelity; pine (matsu) symbolizes endurance and perseverance - both are traditional motifs for bridal kimono.  And then there are so many florals - ume (plum blossoms), botan (peony), kiku (chrysanthemum), and hanashoubu (irises). It's hard to believe but yes, those golden peonies were created completely with gold couching!

These wedding kimono are a gorgeous display of Japanese art and culture and can be an heirloom treasure handed down generation after generation. View the slide show below to be amazed at these elaborate works of artistry!

If you plan to display this kimono, we offer sturdy wooden rods for hanging - see options in the tab below. See the slideshow below on how these are worn or displayed.
