Bold violet and cool blue create a wonderfully graphic look on this vintage michiyuki, with oversized curling vines sweeping freely across the jacket. The blue vine forms are worked in kanoko, or "fawn spot," shibori, giving their edges a wonderfully intricate, hand-dyed texture against the saturated purple background. Look more closely and a subtle tone-on-tone jacquard emerges beneath the bold design, revealing a traditional landscape with pagoda-style architecture, trees, and scenery that almost disappears until the light catches it.

Michiyuki are traditional Japanese overcoats designed for both function and polish, originally worn when stepping out, as reflected in the name, michi meaning “street” and yuki meaning “going out.” Most michiyuki have a distinctive square neckline, inner ties to keep the hemline neatly aligned, snap closures for a secure fit, and sometimes even a hidden pocket on the right front panel. Worn over kimono to protect from weather and wear, michiyuki blend utility with refined style. Today, these jackets are used for layering pieces over dresses or denim, repurposed into unique textile projects, or displayed as home decor.
