We create our Japanique Tapestries by upcycling what we can when other sections of the garment are beyond repair or rescue. This listing is for a wall hanging tapestry made from an antique obi belt.

Full of quiet storytelling, this tapestry has a performance theme, with individually woven motifs appliqued (sewn on like patches) onto a soft green silk background.  An appliqued pattern is quite rare - this is only the third we've seen in over 25 years.

The scene includes a small figure dressed in a ceremonial kimono adorned with birds and aa headpiece reminiscent of the Edo Period court. Nearby are two appliqued squares of weaving - one of a stylized mask and the other of bamboo.  A third item appears at the end of the piece - a lacquered box and red paper - a ticket to the show?

It comes ready to hang with a sturdy cardboard rod (formerly the cardboard core of a kimono fabric bolt) and cording - both easily removable and replaceable to suit your space. We included another rod at the bottom for added weight but can be removed.

Our Japanique Tapestries transform salvaged imagery from kimono, haori, or obi into striking displays that highlight the original artistry, including dye work, embroidery, hand painting, and woven patterns. These textiles preserve history while fitting beautifully into modern spaces. No two are alike, each one carries its own story, texture, and character.
