This charming vintage print was part of a series of pencil and charcoal sketches done by US military artists in 1945.  It was part of an 18-piece collection of similar pencil sketches, all done by US Military artists to document post-war Japan., called "Sketches of Japan 1945".

This vintage print reproduces an original pencil sketch of the Sanmon, or main gate, of Nanzen-ji Temple in Kyoto, capturing the imposing multi-tiered structure with delicate architectural detail and soft atmospheric shading.

The image includes a handwritten caption identifying the site as "Sanmon of the Nanzen-ji" along with historical notes stating it was first built in 1293 and reconstructed in 1620, with ceilings decorated by images of Buddhist saints and symbols.

The artist is Robert Vrooman, one of three artists who contributed to the series.

Original artwork dates 1945, with this reproduction likely made 1950s to 1970s.

Matted in white - 11" x 14" (9.5" x 7.5" opening) - Does not include frame.
