This listing is for a vintage Japanese furoshiki - a very handy, sturdy, multi-use wrapping cloth used in Japan.

We believe this furoshiki features a unique design by artist Mike Qu'on in black and turquoise against a white background. Although the style is similar to his work, we could not find any reference to his being in Japan or designing for a Japanese firm.  Click on his name above to visit his website.

His contemporary work is not as abstract, but perhaps it is a phase of his earlier work? This could have been intended as a scarf but purchased in Japan and used as a furoshiki. The mystery of art!  The silk is quite smooth with a nice drape.

Artistic furoshiki (often silk) are traditionally used as gift wrap but also make creative wall or table displays. Furoshiki in solid colors or with printed patterns (often cotton or rayon) are more casual versions used for shopping, transporting goods, or storing items at home. These days furoshiki are popular as upcycled grocery totes or to carry whatever we used to carry in a non-recyclable plastic bag. For more about furoshiki and ideas of how to wrap, watch the video below.

Furoshiki are typically a bit longer on one side than the other. See tabs below for more details about this particular furoshiki.
