This listing is for a unique woven panel of vintage indigo cotton with a design created with the kasuri (or ikat) technique. It is called e-gasuri when the design creates a picture of something rather than a geometric or abstract design.

The imagery is of Daruma, one of the Seven Lucky Gods, who is the symbol of perseverance and fortitude.  Daruma has no arms or legs so he wobbles but can't tip over. This panel might have been a sample or surplus from a futon or cushion cover.

See the video below about the indigo dyeing process.

The pattern was woven using the ikat technique, where the silk threads are bound and dyed in a pattern before they are woven so that the images emerge on the loom. It's a fascinating and time-consuming process that takes great skill from many artisans. See video below about ikat is done.

The inspiring designs, hand work, and the ageless beauty of vintage Japanese textiles make all the extra work so worthwhile. See video below for inspiration on upcycling vintage Japanese textiles.
