This unusual folk-art bell is made from a large nutshell, perhaps - walnut or another tree nut - hand painted with the cartoonish face and attire of a classic Japanese warrior. The front features expressive brushwork and a simple crest motif on each of his shoulders, while the back has the inscription "Satsuma bell", identifying it as a regional souvenir from Kagoshima.

Attached is a woven cord to make it easy to hang. Lightweight, organic, and full of character, it is a delightful example of rustic Japanese craft tradition.
