This listing is for a single Japanese katagami stencil purchased recently in Kyoto - never used - but created with the traditional hole-punch technique.  Read below to learn more about katagami stencils. Read below to learn more about katagami stencils.

Set sail on a voyage across the high seas! This Japanese katagami stencil features a majestic sailing ship with billowing sails, flags, and a distinctive cross surrounded by four stars on its central sail, reminiscent of historical European maritime emblems. Stylized rolling waves and curling sea spray surround the vessel, while a graceful bird in flight, positioned upside down beneath the scene, adds an unexpected decorative element.

The emblem on the central sail resembles the Cross of the Order of Christ, a symbol historically associated with Portuguese sailing ships and maritime exploration.

The intricate design is created entirely through hundreds of tiny, carefully spaced perforations that resemble delicate embroidery stitches. These dotted lines trace the ship's sails, curling waves, and graceful bird in flight, giving the artwork the appearance of finely stitched needlework rather than traditional cutout stencil work.

This stencil measures 16.5 x 11.5 inches and shows signs of minimal age and use, including surface marks and light creasing. The perforated design appears well preserved.

Japanese katagami stencils were used to create intricate patterns on textiles, particularly kimono fabrics. Hand-cut from layers of washi paper treated with persimmon tannin (kakishibu), the paper becomes strong, flexible, and water-resistant, allowing the stencils to withstand repeated use in the dyeing process. Each stencil showcases the artistry and precision of Japanese craftsmanship, with designs ranging from delicate florals and geometric patterns to symbolic and nature-inspired motifs. Once practical tools for textile production, these vintage stencils are now appreciated as collectible works of art, beautiful for framing, display, or creative projects.
