This listing is for a Japanese folk-art clay sculpture.

This expressive sculpture captures a pair of kappa - mythical river nymphs - intertwined in a dramatic embrace. The elongated limbs and loving expressions give the piece an artistic, romantic energy that is unusual as a fairly intimate pose for Japanese crafts.

The warm earthen clay surface has a natural matte texture that highlights the sculptor's hands, which shaped each curve.

It is marked on the base with writing that appears to reference Kurashiki, a city in Okayama Prefecture known for its arts and crafts traditions, which adds a touch of regional charm. The inscription also includes the date Showa 49 or 1974.
