This listing is for an antique hikeshi zukin or fireman's hood. These unique and rare hoods are crafted from thick, quilted indigo-dyed cotton for heat resistance and protection. Originally worn by hikeshi (traditional Japanese firefighters), these hoods were soaked in water before entering burning buildings to protect the head, shoulders, and neck from sparks and heat.

This hood was made with densely quilted indigo-dyed cotton with thick sashiko-stitched layers. The bold red stripe and the kanji at the forehead mark the wearer as part of a specific firefighting unit. The kanji translates to "group" or "brigade" - a symbol of unity, teamwork and shared duty. This hood secures with two buttoned layers and flares out allowing it to be worn over other protective garments.

Note the dragon design on the inside of the hood.  It likely matched the inside of a fireman's jacket that would have been part of the uniform.  After successfully extinguishing the fire, these garments were turned inside out to reveal the inside lining with its triumphant imagery.

The hand-stitched sashiko represents many, many hours of skilled stitching - a practice that was replaced by machine stitching by the mid-century.

Signs of age and patina tell a story of practical use, making this piece not only a functional artifact of Japan's firefighting history, but also a collectible example of disaster prevention craftmanship.
