Dark and atmospheric, this vintage black haori creates a moonlit scene illuminated by flashes of the gold and silver of sparrows in flight.  These woven birds sweep across shadowy bridges beneath large tonal moons and drifting cloud forms in the jacquard. 

Scattered calligraphy (sorry, we can't translate) gives the design the feeling of poetry floating through a nighttime landscape. The metallic birds provide a striking contrast against the nearly monochrome scenery, with birds in flight traditionally suggesting freedom, movement, and the changing seasons.

A single stitched crest rests at the upper back. Inside, the restrained exterior gives way to a wonderfully vivid cream lining filled with jewel-toned birds, dragons, clouds, and medallions over fine rippling lines.

Black haori like this are sometimes called "visiting haori" since they were worn for semi-formal occasions, like attending a community gathering.

A woman's haori is a traditional Japanese jacket worn over a kimono, designed to provide both warmth and an added layer of formality. Today, these jackets transition effortlessly into modern fashion as a lightweight, open-front layer.
