This listing is for an underkimono - called a "juban" in Japanese - which would be worn under a man's kimono. Learn more about this type of kimono below.

A quiet rural landscape unfolds across this men’s underkimono, its subdued shades of gray, blue, cream, and brown giving it the feeling of an old, illustrated storybook. The back design is arranged within overlapping open-book and stylized snowflake forms, filled with scenes of traditional architecture, sculptural pine trees, bundled sheaves of harvested grain, birds, and patterned fields -- imagery that evokes prosperity, perseverance, and the changing seasons.

A wide geometric floral lattice band wraps the lower body, while narrow woven decorative trim along the hem and sleeve edges adds an especially distinctive finishing detail.

Signs of age are present, including light discoloration, scattered marks, and gentle wear consistent with the garment’s vintage history, see last photo(s).

Juban often feature designs that reflect the interests of their owner but are rarely seen in public since they are layered underneath a kimono. Just an inch or two of the over-collar is visible, though you may catch a glimpse of the sleeve edge at the wrist. Juban make great casual robes.

This kimono does not come with an obi/belt/sash, but we do make simple cotton sashes that can be added as an option when you order. We will choose a color that goes well with it.
