Treasures seem to drift through a midnight sky on this richly detailed black haori, with ornate decorative boxes glowing in red, silver, and gold. Woven urushi lacquered threads highlight the intricate boxes and their floral details, including a kai-awase shell-matching game -- an elegant Heian-period pastime associated with refinement and courtly culture.

Tonal waves and clouds are woven into the black jacquard background, while the unexpected lining adds a playful contrast with colorful figures engaged in traditional games, work, and everyday activities.

Black haori like this are sometimes called "visiting haori" since they were worn for semi-formal occasions, like attending a community gathering.
