This listing is for a vintage Japanese haori jacket that would have been worn on top of a vintage kimono on a chilly day.  Black haori like this are sometimes called "visiting haori" since they were worn for sem-formal occasions, like attending a community gathering.

This haori features an unusual patterning - done so well!  Delicate, tiny stitches create drums (taiko) and folding fan (sens) shapes on the black jacquard silk - but look closely to realize that the embroidery is done over the same elements woven into the silk! We think the gold outlining of the elements was painted on rather than embroidered because the lines are so thin, but a strong magnifying glass might prove differently. In any case, the needlework mimicking ("echoing") the background design is quite striking.

Note that the sleeves have been "hemmed" in the traditional way - not cut and sewn but rather tucked up into the sleeve and basted there.  The sleeves are now 17" long but the 7" tuck could extend that to 24" if desired, just by removing the basting threads and ironing out the fold lines.

Nice silk lining.

Haori do not cross over or tie with a sash, like a kimono does - they are meant to be worn open to reveal a bit of what is worn beneath.
