This listing is for a Japanese summer kimono - called a yukata – that seems to be a man’s version since the sleeves are sewn completely to the bodice, but a few things about this yukata suggest it could be worn by men or women.

The dark indigo and white palette is typical, but the pinwheel florals are more commonly seen on a woman’s kimono.

In addition, this cotton kimono is lined, and yukata rarely are!  The lining makes it heavier than most would desire in the Japanese summer heat and humidity – another reason to wonder about its history and original purpose.

There are a few light spots on some of the white areas but they do not detract from the design or wearability.

Yukata can be worn with a casual sash or even styled with a contemporary belt of scarf.  If you’d like something traditional, we sometimes have casual hanhaba (half-width) obi in our shop, but we also offer a simple cotton sash that can be added to your order by clicking the option above. We'll choose a color that goes with or contrasts nicely with the yukata.
