This listing is for a dochugi-style vintage kimono jacket, which crosses over in the kimono style (unlike the haori style which hangs open in the front). But instead of needing an obi, it closes with inner and outer ties, which can be tied loosely to allow for a more generous fit. Where haori are best for up to a size 12, dochugi can fit up to a size 16+.

This dochugi would make a great lounging robe.  The silk is smooth, soft and a delight to put on. The color is a light teal and the pattern of white dashes makes us think of sunlight reflecting on the water.

The ties of this dochugi are black and white and the sleeves and bodice seem to have been pieced together, perhaps a sign of upcycling from a damaged or out-of-style kimono.

The fun thing about this dochugi is the "hidden message" of a series of kanji characters that were woven into the silk.  We cannot make out what they mean - and they are not readily visible unless the fabric is turned a particular way in the light. We tried to capture them in the last photos but they may be hard to see.

Please note that the measurement given for the waist/hips is the full, end-to-end measurement around the middle. The ties can usually add 3-4 more inches of coverage depending on how tightly or loosely they are tied.

Dochugi are often worn by shop keepers or studio artisans in Japan, so they may feature tapered sleeves and cross-over ties to keep the wearer warm and the fabric out of the way while providing a tailored, professional look.
