This listing is for an underkimono - called a juban in Japanese - which would be worn under a man's kimono. Juban often feature designs that reflect the interests of their owner but are rarely seen in public since they are layered underneath a kimono. Just in inch or two of the over-collar is visible, though you may catch a glimpse of the sleeve edge at the wrist. Juban make great casual robes.

This juban features one of the Shichi-fuku-jin (Seven Gods of Luck) - Daikoku the god of wealth and prosperity. As you can see, he is holding a wish-granting mallet in one hand, bag of treasures in the other, and the two bundles of rice at the bottom. The other elements - the black box and cream-colored ovals with kanji - were created with the shibori technique.

The over-collar is black, and the juban is not lined.

Unfortunately, this juban has collected a series of blemishes over the 50+ years of its life.  See photos to get an idea of the many flaws, which are reflected in the price.  Rather than deconstructing this for fabric, we hope it will find a place with a collector who appreciates its unique and artistic appeal. If worn as originally intended - underneath a kimono - only the wearer will see the blemishes or know its story.

Juban make great robes and cover ups but watch the video below to see how to layer the juban with a kimono.

This kimono does not come with an obi/belt/sash, but we do make simple cotton sashes that can be added as an option when you order. We will choose a color that goes well with it.

If you'd like to display the kimono, we offer hanging rods in five colors (brown, black, natural, white, and red) - see the Add a Display Rod? tab below.
