This listing is for a vintage Japanese furoshiki - a very handy, sturdy, multi-use wrapping cloth used in Japan. But this one is a unique pattern and is definitely a display piece.

The design of this furoshiki was created by Serizawa Keisuke, a well-known Japanese artist who passed away in 1984. The patterning features a four kanji characters (the four seasons) that appear like tied ribbons - a design element he is known for - in shades of blue. Many florals and small motifs surround the kanji. Comes with the original box.

Artistic furoshiki (often silk) are traditionally used as gift wrap but also make creative wall or table displays. Furoshiki in solid colors or with printed patterns (often cotton or rayon) are more casual versions used for shopping, transporting goods, or storing items at home. These days furoshiki are popular as upcycled grocery totes or to carry whatever we used to carry in a non-recyclable plastic bag.
