This listing is for a vintage Japanese furoshiki - a very handy, sturdy, multi-use wrapping cloth used in Japan.  A folded furoshiki can also be easily carried in a purse or backpack to provide a makeshift carrier for groceries or purchases.

This vintage furoshiki brings a beautiful sense of tradition with its rich green color and stenciled wisteria crest which symbolizes elegance, longevity, and refined grace. The opposite corner has stylized kanji that reads Yamada which is likely a family or merchant name. This extra-large furoshiki is actually two panels hand stitched together. Look closely to see the nubby silk texture with natural irregularities that show its character.

50" x 48.5"

Artistic furoshiki (often silk) are traditionally used as gift wrap but also make creative wall or table displays. Furoshiki in solid colors or with printed patterns (often cotton or rayon) are more casual versions used for shopping, transporting goods, or storing items at home. These days furoshiki are popular as upcycled grocery totes or to carry whatever we used to carry in a non-recyclable plastic bag.
