This listing is for one yard of reclaimed vintage Japanese fabric salvaged from a vintage Japanese kimono.

This fabric features a gray silk with a slightly rough but not unpleasant texture.  Lightweight and drapey. The weave seems to be a grid of abstract motifs in dark blue and brown threads.

The pattern was woven using the ikat technique, where the silk threads are bound and dyed in a pattern before they are woven so that the images emerge on the loom. It's a fascinating and time-consuming process that takes great skill from many artisans. See video below about ikat is done.

Great for piecework, especially when combined with other vintage kimono remnants. Multiple pieces may be available.

When we find vintage (circa 1950s but could be older or newer by two decades) Japanese kimono or haori in less-than-sellable condition, we salvage what we can and offer it to artisans, quilters, crafters, and designers for project work. So, the fabric has been previously sewn and though we carefully deconstruct the kimono, previous seam lines, as well as minor blemishes, may need to be worked around or trimmed away.

The inspiring designs, hand work, and the ageless beauty of vintage Japanese textiles make all the extra work so worthwhile. See video below for inspiration on upcycling vintage Japanese textiles.
