The fabric is black silk - this was originally a semi-formal kimono created for a somber occasion - with a bit of nubbiness and a smooth sheen. There are three family crests across the back, whichi siginifies it was a formal, but not the highest level of formality (which would have had two more crests, one on each of the front shoulders). The crest - a paulownia floral - was originally just a circle covered with a resist paste to remain white while the rest of the silk was dyed black, and then the crest was painted with the steady hand of an artist as a final design step.

The lining is a white cotton - comfy but surprising given the formality of the kimono. It would normally be silk, which would have made it more expensive originally .

We modified the length to 45" and made a matching belt from the remnant. The belt is 5" wide and 82" long -- not a wide obi-like sash you'd normally see with a kimono, but very easy to put on!
