This cotton kimono may look like a yukata, but it is actually called a nemaki and is meant for at-home use.  They are also offered as robes at spas and hotels. Nemaki differ from yukata in that they are shorter, in a softer cotton, with narrow sleeves.

This is a unique kimono indeed.  The fabric is cotton with a beautiful overall shibori pattern that appears to change along each panel, with a softness like a quiet morning by the sea; every section of blue seems to ripple.

We've called this a nemaki because of the narrow sleeves, but it might easily have been worn outside the home.  It is crafted with an overall shibori resist-dye technique (Japanese tie dye), creating a dense field of tiny indigo blue shapes that read like waves, pebbles or drifting petals depending on how the light hits. The pattern is fully hand-worked, giving the cotton a gentle texture and a living, organic rhythm that machine prints can never imitate.

Unfortunately, there are some signs of age with a small blemish on the back, see last photo, but still in very good vintage condition.  An excellent addition to any shibori, indigo or kimono collection.

This kimono does not come with an obi or sash, but you can add one of our simple cotton sashes for $15, click the option on the right.

See the videos below for how to put on a casual kimono or yukata as well as a slide show of many beautiful ones!
