This listing is for a vintage Japanese child's underkimono, meant for a little boy, that we overdyed in indigo.  Originally it would be layered underneath a miyamairi kimono, which is a ceremonial kimono worn for festivals and very special occasions.

Our dyework is amateur - this came out more wabi-sabi than we would have liked.  The darker spots came from contact with the concentrated indigo "flower" or "bloom" saturated the fabric.  We like the light and dark mottling you see elsewhere.

The fabric has a tone-on-tone jacquard pattern of sayagata - a popular traditional pattern that symbolizes continuity and good fortune. We suspect the fiber is a silky synthetic, though typically synthetic does not take the dye as well as this did.

We hope some creative artisan will claim this little gem as a base for an embellishment project - embroidery?  applique? painting?
