This listing is for a traditional vintage Japanese kimono, in a style that was popular in the 1950s.

The background silk is a soft dusty pink with a jacquard weave of paired, mirrored cranes in a diamond shape.

The featured elements are three peacocks perched in different areas of the design:  a large, blue-headed peacock appears on the front panel, with its tail feathers trailing all along the hemline. A second bird is nestled in a floral bouquet on the back, and a third bird with a golden crest is perched on a lantern at the right shoulder.

Dozens of flowers surround the birds - red-centered daisies, white paper peonies, orange blossoms, and more.

A single white paulownia crest appears at the neck.

Althought it's impossible to assign an exact age to any kimono, we suspect this may be from the 1940s or 1950s based on the design, colors, smaller size and techniques.

The patterning was created with the yuzen technique - a combination of katazome stencil and brush painting that depends on the skills of dozens of artisans.  See videos below for more information on how this is done.

If you'd like to display the kimono, we offer hanging rods in four colors - see tab at right.

If you'd like to wear or display this kimono with a traditional obi, browse our Fukuro Style Obi or email us if you don't see one you like. Although it isn't traditional, if you'd like one of our simple cotton sashes to wear with this, we'll choose a complimenting color for $15 (see Add A Sash above).
