This listing is for a vintage michiyuki jacket, meant to be worn over a kimono. A square neck line, inner ties to keep the hemline straight, snap closure, and a hidden pocket on the right front panel are the specific features of a michiyuki - michi means "street" and yuki refers to "going out".

This jacket features a fun and funky retro pattern of nested rectangles in autum colors against a black background. We love the retro, bold graphics of this design! Great as a display piece in a mid-century modern decor!

We think the design was brush painted, alternating the palette colors in each set of lines; the lines were then covered with a rice paste resist before the entire length of silk was dyed black.  The paste would have been boiled off, leaving the design. Little bits of black shading in some of the lines may have seeped through where the rice paste was not thick enough.

Michiyuki are a narrow garment, fastened with snaps that will open if the fit is too tight. (The measurement we give is the jacket snapped closed, so your hips and waist measurement should be several inches smaller than the hips/waist measurement we give.)
