This is a vintage kimono jacket, called a haori, made for a man. Learn more about this type of garment below. 

Fierce and commanding, this haori reveals a dramatic hand-painted tiger rising from a sparse grove of bamboo -- its open jaws, sweeping tail, and bold stripes giving the composition a wonderful sense of movement. Tigers traditionally symbolize courage, strength, and protection, while resilient bamboo adds associations of endurance and flexibility, making the pairing especially powerful.

The outer silk is classic solid black, finished with five myoga (Japanese ginger) family crests.

Signs of age are present with some blemished areas on the front lining panels, see last photo.

The lining of men's haori jackets often depict a scene or motif that was of special interest to the original owner. We often display these jackets inside out to show the lining, and they could be worn this way - inside out - as well; a style that is becoming trendy among Japanese youth.
