This listing is a vintage Japanese folding fan (sensu in Japanese). See videos below on how the paper version of these fans are made - it's quite an elaborate and precise process. Dance fans are larger, wider, and sturdier than ones made for everyday use.

Refined and luminous, the Kyoto-made Japanese mai ogi (stage-use) dance fan unfolds in soft gradations of indigo and midnight blue, its shimmer catching the light like water under moonlight. IT may look two-toned but it's only the shadow of the folds. Created by the Matsuya Fukui Senpo of Kyoto, which is renowned for traditional performance fans. The fan comes in its original box marked Isuzu Ayame style, preserving its maker's seal and heritage. Warm natural bamboo ribs and a subtle metallic finish.

There are signs of age as the edges and pleats are starting to show some wear, but still quite usable and unique.

These vintage Japanese fans are wonderful as wall accents or used as props in dance, photography, or ceremony. Beautiful for home or office display or as a thoughtful gift.
