This listing is for a decorative image taken from a vintage Japanese katagami stencil, suitable for framing.  It is not part of the original stencil - it is a copied image, machine-cut, on thick art paper. See below for how these traditional stencils were designed, cut by hand and used to pattern Japanese textiles.

This is a wheel crest (kuruma-mon), a bold geometric emblem symbolizing movement, continuity, and the turning of fate, with roots in both aristocratic culture and Buddhist imagery. Its clean, radial design conveys balance and enduring strength, making it a timeless motif used by multiple samurai families across Japan.

Your purchase includes only a sheet of the katagami art and a contrasting piece of cardstock to place behind it. You can choose black or white and 8" x 8" square or 8"x 10".

Photos show examples of how a carefully chosen piece of kimono fabric placed behind the crest adds depth, texture, and cultural resonance, allowing the colors and patterns of the textile to animate the design and transform into a layered work of art.
The last photos give suggestions for framing.

8" x 10" or 8" x 8", machine-cut on 90lb art paper. Available in black or white.
