This listing is for a unique indigo-dyed "envelope" that we suspect was used to cover a small futon or a large cushion based on the use and faded areas.  But the design differs from traditional cushion covers which would have had a slit (to insert the cushion) at the mid-back, not on the side. It's a mystery to us.

The piece is hand-sewn on three sides with an open top. The fabric is sturdy and dyed with indigo to a rich blue tone around the edges, but decades of use have softened the color to a range of blues, with areas of fading, light staining, and small worn holes that speak to its long service life. These marks, along with subtle variations in the weave, and the pieced panels, give it a wabi-sabi character - a prime example of "the beauty in imperfection". This piece will be appreciated as a collectible folk textile and an excellent example of hand-dyeing and hand-stitching techniques.

Watch the video below about the indigo dyeing process.
